KAZUO UNNO

Born in Tokyo in 1947, Kazuo Unno is a nature photographer specializing in insects. Ever since he can remember he has been fascinated by the allure of insects, and he spent most of his time in his boyhood collecting and observing butterflies. He studied insect behavior in the research institute headed by Toshitaka Hidaka at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. The publication by a magazine of a photograph taken in his university days showing the mating rejection behavior of a gray-veined white butterfly motivated him to choose a career as a freelance photographer.
Over many years he has taken photographs of insect mimicry in tropical rainforest regions of Asia and the Americas. Since 1990 he has maintained a studio in Komoro City in Nagano Prefecture, where he records the surrounding nature. His book “Camouflage and Mimicry of Insects” (Heibonsha, Limited) was awarded a Photographic Society of Japan Annual Award in 1994. Other main publications include “Butterflies” (Heibonsha, Limited), “Big Book of Insects – Rainforest Edition” (Data House), “Days of Moths and Butterflies” (Fukuinkan Shoten Publishers, Inc.), and “Portraits of Japanese Insects/Portraits of World’s Insects” (Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, Ltd.).
Mr. Unno is also active in television, appearing on programs on the NHK Educational TV channel including “Welcome Back, Graduate!”, “Human Lecture” and “Point of View, Point at Issue”.
As well as being chairman of the Society of Scientific Photography, Mr. Unno is a board member of the Japan Insect Association and a member of the Japan Professional Photographers Society, among other organizations.
